What is oral medicine and pathology?

Oral medicine and pathology is the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting oral and related structures, which include teeth, jaws, salivary glands and, in particular, the oral mucosa. It is also concerned with the oral manifestations of systemic disease – as the mouth can often mirror underlying systemic problems.

At your initial consultation, your surgeon will be able to explain the particulars of your unique case.

What does treatment involve?

A biopsy (sample of tissue) may be required to achieve a diagnosis. Other investigations such as blood tests, x-rays or CT scans may also be needed. As part of the diagnostic process an accurate medical history is essential. Once your condition is diagnosed, a personalised treatment plan can be developed.
