What is an extraction?

Extraction is the technical word for having a tooth removed.

Why do I need an extraction?

There are a number of reasons why your dentist may feel it is necessary that that you have a tooth extracted. The tooth may be damaged from decay or trauma, the support from the gums and bone may be compromised, or an abscess or disease may be adversely affecting your mouth.

What does the procedure involve?

During an extraction, the tooth is removed using forceps and elevators. It is an uncomplicated procedure that usually does not take a long time.

Will it be painful?

Depending on the severity of the condition, either a local or general anaesthetic will be recommended. Hence, the procedure won’t be painful. However, under local anaesthetic you are likely to experience a sensation of pressure as the tooth is loosened and freed.

Will I need to have the tooth replaced?

Your specialist will discuss your options, which may include a denture, bridge, or implant.
